IotW: Fade Away

In case you missed it, there was a total lunar eclipse last Wednesday night (or morning, depending where you are). I haven’t done a lot of night photography, so this was a good chance to get out the tripod and play with long exposures and low ISO settings.

This is Luna’s path for about twenty minutes starting at 2:30 am.  It took about 2 hours for the earth’s shadow to fully obscure the moon. During that time, a red-orange glow slowly filled in the darkened side.

You’ve probably heard about this eclipse being a ‘blood moon’ and seen pictures of a bright red moon during similar events past. As of 4am, Luna was more rust than blood, but this moon-gazer didn’t stay up any longer to see if the blood moon would live up to it’s name.
